Every major SEO platform now ships an MCP server. That is a genuinely useful development and also a confusing one, because "SEO MCP server" describes at least four different kinds of product, and the reviews mostly rank them as if they were interchangeable.

They are not. A backlink index, a crawler, your own Search Console data, and a content pipeline are different tools that happen to speak the same protocol. Picking well means knowing which job you are trying to do.

This guide covers what these servers actually give you, the four questions that decide which one fits, and how the main options compare. Prices shown are the entry tier that actually includes MCP access — not the platform's cheapest plan, which often excludes it. Accurate as of July 2026, and it moves quickly, so check before you commit.

What an SEO MCP server actually does

The Model Context Protocol, open-sourced by Anthropic in late 2024, is a standard way for an AI assistant to call external tools. An SEO MCP server exposes SEO capabilities through that standard, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or your own agent can use them directly.

The practical difference is the end of copy-paste. Instead of exporting a keyword gap to CSV and pasting it into a chat window, you ask a question and the assistant fetches the data itself, in context, and can immediately do the next thing with it.

What it does not do is make the underlying data better. An MCP server is a delivery mechanism. If a platform's backlink index is thin, its MCP server returns thin backlink data faster. Judge the data first and the protocol second.

The four questions that decide it

1. Whose data is it?

This is the most important question and the one most comparisons skip.

Your own data — Search Console, Analytics, your warehouse — is ground truth. Actual impressions, actual clicks, actual positions for your actual site. The Search Console and GA4 MCP servers are free, and if you are not connected to them you are guessing when you could be measuring.

Third-party data — Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking, DataForSEO — is modelled. Search volumes are estimates, traffic figures are inferences from clickstream panels, and difficulty scores are proprietary formulas. This data is indispensable for anything involving competitors, because you cannot see their Search Console. But it is an estimate, and different vendors will give you different numbers for the same keyword.

Practical rule: use first-party data for anything about your own site, third-party data for anything about someone else's. Assistants will happily blur that line if you let them, so it is worth saying explicitly in your prompt which source you want.

2. Do you need it to read, or to act?

Almost every SEO MCP server is read-only. Ahrefs is explicit about this — its 42 tools retrieve data, and write operations that exist in its REST API, like managing Rank Tracker projects, are deliberately not exposed over MCP. Semrush and SE Ranking are the same. This is a defensible choice: an agent that can only read cannot break anything.

It also means the workflow stops at the analysis. The assistant tells you about the keyword gap; closing it is still your afternoon.

A smaller group can act. Frase runs research through to publishing, into its own CMS or out to WordPress, Webflow and Sanity. Opinly is built the other way round. 3. Remote or local?

Underrated, and it will shape your day more than the feature list.

Remote servers are a URL. You add the endpoint, authenticate once through OAuth, and it works from any device including mobile. Nothing to install, nothing to keep running.

Local servers run on your machine. The Search Console and GA4 servers need Python and a credentials file. Screaming Frog's MCP, native since version 24.0 in May 2026, needs the application actually open on the same machine — so it cannot serve a scheduled job or a phone.

Local is not worse. Screaming Frog remains the most thorough crawler available and its MCP is included with the licence at no extra cost. But if you want an agent that runs unattended, every local dependency is a thing that has to be running.

4. What does a session cost?

Two costs, and people forget the second.

The subscription is visible. DataForSEO's pay-as-you-go model is the cheapest way to run heavy custom workloads; the suites cost more but bundle interface, reporting and support.

Tokens are not visible until the bill arrives. SEO data is verbose — a keyword export or a backlink profile can be thousands of rows, and every row entering the context window is billed. A single ambitious question against a large site can burn a surprising amount.

Mitigations that work: ask for filtered, limited results rather than everything; prefer servers that paginate and summarise rather than dumping; and watch for hard caps. Several servers — BigQuery's among them — limit the rows they will return or time out long queries. Those are sensible guards, but they can cut a large analysis short without announcing it, so it is worth asking whether a result set came back complete.

The servers, by what they are best at

DataForSEO — the raw layer. Not a dashboard; an API you build against, priced per call. If you are building a custom pipeline rather than asking ad-hoc questions, start here and stop paying for an interface you will not open.

Google Search Console — your ground truth, free. There is no official Google server here; the most widely used community one is mcp-gsc, with around twenty tools covering search analytics, URL inspection and sitemaps. Community-maintained is worth knowing about, but there is no substitute for first-party data.

Google Analytics 4 — official, free, and the other half of the first-party picture. Search Console tells you how people arrived; GA4 tells you what they did next.

Screaming Frog — the crawler. Roughly 29 tools, £-for-£ the deepest technical audit available, with the caveat that it needs the desktop app running locally.

Firecrawl — extraction. Turns arbitrary pages into clean markdown an assistant can reason over. Generous free tier. The right tool when you need to read pages rather than measure them.

BigQuery — scale. If you already pipe GSC exports into a warehouse, this lets an assistant query years of unsampled data. Mind the row cap.

Frase — the content pipeline. Brief generation, brand-voice writing, dual SEO and GEO scoring, and publishing to WordPress, Webflow or Sanity, from $49/mo. Strongest if your bottleneck is producing content.

Two things worth doing on day one:

Ask the assistant to list its tools. You will discover capabilities the marketing page never mentions, and you will find out quickly if a server is thinner than advertised.

Ask a question you already know the answer to. Verify the numbers against the platform's own interface before you trust the connection for anything that matters.
